P0487 — EGR Throttle Control Circuit “A” Open

Category

Powertrain → Sensors / EGR System Control

What it means (plain English)

Modern diesels use an EGR throttle valve (also called an intake throttle or air control valve) to create a pressure differential that pulls exhaust gases into the intake.

A P0487 code means the ECM has detected an open circuit or no response from the throttle plate actuator (circuit “A”). In short — the ECM commanded the EGR throttle, but the signal/control feedback is missing.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or hesitation
  • Reduced power, limp/derate mode possible
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Excessive black smoke (if valve stuck open)
  • Increased NOx emissions (if valve stuck closed, reducing EGR flow)
  • Possible turbo lag

Priority Level

Medium–High
The truck will usually still run, but incorrect throttle/EGR control can cause emissions failures, turbo issues, and excessive soot buildup over time.

Common Causes

  • Failed EGR throttle actuator (motor or position sensor)
  • Open circuit in wiring to actuator
  • Corroded or loose connectors (common in high-heat zones)
  • Sticking throttle plate (carbon buildup)
  • ECM driver fault (rare)

How Pros Diagnose It (step-by-step)

  1. Scan tool confirmation — verify P0487, check for companion EGR or airflow codes.
  2. Command test — use scan tool to cycle the EGR throttle valve, verify movement.
  3. Visual inspection — check throttle plate for carbon buildup or sticking.
  4. Wiring/connector check — continuity test to actuator.
  5. Backprobe actuator — verify reference voltage, ground, and signal return.
  6. If commanded but no movement, replace actuator.
  7. If wiring and actuator are good, suspect ECM output fault.

Likely Fixes

  • Clean or replace EGR throttle body/valve
  • Replace failed actuator assembly
  • Repair/replace damaged wiring or connectors
  • ECM replacement (last resort, very rare)

Related/Companion Codes

  • P0401 — EGR Flow Insufficient
  • P0402 — EGR Flow Excessive
  • P0488 — EGR Throttle Position Range/Performance
  • P2141 — EGR Throttle Control Circuit Low
  • P2142 — EGR Throttle Control Circuit High

Tech Notes (Quick Hits)

  • Duramax LMM/LML — EGR throttle actuator failures are common, often requiring full throttle body replacement.
  • Cummins ISX/ISB — carbon buildup in throttle plate area frequently causes sticking.
  • Ford Powerstroke 6.4L/6.7L — harness chafing and actuator motor failure are frequent culprits.
  • Cleaning may buy time, but replacement is often the long-term fix.

Severity: Medium–High — Repair Soon
A P0487 code means your truck’s EGR throttle valve isn’t responding correctly. This can cause poor power, smoke, and emissions problems. Cleaning or replacing the valve and checking wiring usually restores proper operation.
